If you’re traveling to Sichuan, there is no way you can miss out visiting the Giant Panda Base. Do you know that Sichuan is the home for pandas?
Pandas are not only the national treasure of China, but they are also loved by people all around the world.
Little Facts about Pandas and Visiting Them in Sichuan
Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, or in short, the Chengdu Giant Panda Base started in 1987 with only 6 pandas. But today, the number of pandas there has grown to over 120.
The panda base is located just about 10km away from the city center. If you’re going to take a cab there, it will take you about 30 to 45 minutes. Of course, you can also choose to follow a tour or take the subway there.
And do you know that pandas can only be found in the Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces?

Overall, there are 5 places where you can see the giant panda:
- The Chengdu Giant Panda Base
- Ya’an Bifengxia Base of China Conservation and Research Center of Giant Panda is 150km (93 miles) to the southwest of Chengdu.
- Dujiangyan Panda Base about 56km (34 miles) northwest of Chengdu, is also an ideal choice to see the cute animals.
- Dujiangyan Panda Valley is 60km (37 miles) away from Chengdu.
- Wolong National Nature Reserve is 130km (80 miles) from Chengdu.
The Chengdu Giant Panda Base is the most convenience center since it is located within the Chengdu district. As for the other centers, they are located in the outskirt and you may need more time to get there.
Plus, the Chengdu Giant Panda Base has the most giant pandas. And sometimes, if you’re lucky, you can encounter the red panda too!
As for the other centers, they have lesser pandas, and of course, they will be less crowded too.
Hence, if you’re going to visit the giant panda base in Chengdu, make sure you go there early.

Tips When Visiting the Giant Panda Base
The Chengdu Giant Panda Base is one of the most famous attractions among the locals and tourists.
Hence, you must expect the place to be crowded, especially during holidays.
Unless you are visiting the other centers that are outside of Chengdu, go there early.
There are a few reasons why you want to visit the base early.
First, you want to beat the crowd by getting there early. When you’re early, there are less people and you can enjoy watching those cute and adorable animals.
And also don’t forget to take a nice wefie with the pandas.
Second, the pandas are allowed to be outdoor when the weather is cooling. And this is usually the case in the morning when the panda caretaker will release the panda outside for a feast.
In the afternoon when the weather is hot, they will keep the pandas indoor, lock in their respective ‘rooms’.
Plus, pandas usually sleep in the afternoon. They major activities are – wake up, eat, and sleep.
Thus, visit the place early in the morning.
This way, you get a better chance to see more pandas and there are
Here’s another tip – try to go to the nursery room and see the baby pandas first. After that, only then you take your time to see the giant panda at the outside.
The reason being that when you’re in the nursery room, you need to queue. And in the morning, usually there will be less crowded.
Once you’re late, the queue will be long and you will waste a lot of time waiting to see the baby pandas.
So check out the nursery room first. And then only proceed to the outdoor and check out the giant pandas.
Going to Dujiangyan
If you do not want to visit the panda base in Chengdu, the next 2 best options are the ones in Dujiangyan:
- Dujiangyan Panda Base, and
- Dujiangyan Panda Valley
You can take the high speed rail and get to Dujiangyan in less than 30 minutes.
By the way, Dujiangyan is another great place that I highly recommend you to visit during your travel to Sichuan.
You should spend a few days there.
And usually, people will bundle and visit Dujiangyan and Mount Qingcheng together because they are located near to each other.
